Rapper on the Rise Vaygez Blakk

On February 10th, there was a shift in Hip Hop. The bar heavy project of Vaygez Blakk titled “Bar Queen” was released on all streaming platforms. Vaygez is a Harlem bred Female MC. The difference between Blakk and other female MCs of this era and some of the past is that, even though she is easy on the eyes, she doesn’t use or misuse her assets to get attention in the music game. She bodies a few stages “I personally witnessed “ she’s  been cipher tested a few times once on shade 45’s Lord Sear Show amongst some other heavy spitters and not only did she hold her own but she shined like the diamond she is.

Her voice is distinct, not as heavy as Foxy Brown but not as light as Nicki Minaj but believe she has the versatility and skill to be mentioned with these two Female MCs known to spit heavy bars within this male dominated sport. Her project showcases her ability to rap. Bar Queen is constructed of ten songs with only one feature which is totally unheard of now of days where Artists have co signs and featured heavy projects to try and get other artists’ fan base to ride the wave. However Vaygez opted to keep the ball in a Mamba Mentality. She didn’t disappoint, this project was equal to Kobe rookie season where he exceeded expectations but you knew there was more untapped potential.

Vaygez Blakk starts off with Say Dat which sets the tone for the entire project. As the project moves forward you can begin to get lost in her wordplay and that slick Harlem talk all Harlemites are known  for.  There is truthfully not one “wack” song on Bar Queen and I’m sure as you take a listen in your AirPods or you blast it from your vehicle’s speakers you’ll find a favorite or two.

As I zoned out twice to the entire album, once from start to finish and secondly on shuffle as i do to get a real feel for the work. I found myself replaying Chikko, In The Zone and Everything.  If there is one caveat of the project it is more leaning towards my personal preference of wanting to hear her put together a few more concept guided songs, however I’m sure she has those in her bag.  I recommend this project, so do yourself a favor and stream or download BAR QUEEN from VAYGEZ BLAKK, you won’t be disappointed.

Erykah Badu

Erica Abi Wright (born February 26, 1971), better known by her stage name Erykah Badu is a Grammy Award-winning American singer-songwriter, record producer, activist and actress. Her work includes elements from R&B, hip hop and jazz. She is best known for her role in the rise of the neo soul sub-genre. She is known as the “First Lady of Neo-Soul” or the “Queen of Neo-Soul”.

Early in her career, Badu was recognizable for wearing very large and colorful headwraps. For her musical sensibilities, she has often been compared to jazz great Billie Holiday. She was a core member of the Soulquarians, and is also an actress having appeared in a number of films playing a range of supporting roles in movies such as Blues Brothers 2000, The Cider House Rules and House of D. She also speaks at length in the documentaries Before the Music Dies and “The Black Power Mixtapes”

Erykah Badu was born Erica Abi Wright in Dallas, Texas on February 26, 1971. Her mother raised her, her brother (Jabbada), and her sister (Nayrok) alone after their father, William Wright Jr., deserted the family early in their lives. To provide for her family, the children’s grandmother often helped looking after them while Erykah’s mother, Kolleen Maria Gipson (Wright), performed as an actress in theatrical productions. Influenced by her mother, Erykah had her first taste of show business at the age of 4, singing and dancing with her mother at the Dallas Theatre Centre. Erykah Badu was the owner of Focal point in Dallas, Texas.

By the age of 14, Erykah was free-styling for a local radio station alongside such talent as Roy Hargrove. In her early youth, she decided to change the spelling of her name from Erica to Erykah, as she firmly believed her original name to be her slave name. The term ‘kah’ signifies the inner self. Badu is her favorite jazz scat sound and is also an African name for the 10th born child used for the Akan people in Ghana.

Upon graduating from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Badu went on to study theater at the historically black college Grambling State University. Concentrating on music full-time, she left the university in 1993 before graduating and took on several minimum wage jobs to support herself. She taught drama and dance to children at the South Dallas Cultural Center. Working and touring with her cousin, Robert “Free” Bradford, she recorded a 19-song demo, Country Cousins, which attracted the attention of Kedar Massenburg, who set Badu up to record a duet with D’Angelo, “Your Precious Love,” and eventually signed her to a record deal with Universal Imperial Records.

After 10 years as a vegetarian, Badu became a vegan in 2006: “Vegan food is soul food in its truest form. Soul food means to feed the soul. And to me, your soul is your intent. If your intent is pure, you are pure.” Badu splits her time between Dallas, Texas and Fort Greene, New York.

In 1995, Badu became involved with rapper André 3000 of OutKast, with whom she had her first child, a son named Seven Sirius Benjamin, on November 18, 1997. Their relationship ended sometime in 1999. Their relationship inspired André 3000 to write the song “Ms. Jackson”.

In 2000, Badu was in a romantic relationship with fellow Soulquarian Common; their relationship ended in 2002. On July 5, 2004, Badu gave birth to a daughter, Puma Sabti Curry; Puma’s father is West Coast rapper The D.O.C., originally from Dallas. On February 1, 2009, Badu gave birth to her third child, a girl named Mars Merkaba Thedford, with her boyfriend of five years, rapper Jay Electronica.

Hip Hop and…… Me

I fell in Love with Hip Hop in 1985. I was only six years old. My mother took me and my brother to see the movie Krush Groove. The person who has inspired me the most in Hip Hop is Mr. Shawn Corey Carter better known as Jay Z. Jay Z makes music that I as well as others that live in urban communities can relate to. I hear verses and be like oh hell yeah. He’s talking to or about me. Jay Z raps about the struggle, about loyalty, family, hurt, pain and fears and those are things that all human beings can identify with. Hov raps about hustling but kept it real about the negative aspect of the game. He didn’t glorify it. He admitted that he did it. He also made it clear to the world that this was something that he felt he had to do. He proved to society how poverty is directly correlated with crime. He also proved given the right opportunity that anyone can change. Jay Z encourages through his music. He advises his listeners to educate themselves and stay informed. Jay Z really is dope. He brought Michael Jackson out in Summer Jam. He had Oprah Winfrey come to Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, New York. He also has a close personal relationship with former president Barak Obama. He is a musical genius. He fused Hip Hop and Broadway with his hit Hard Knock Life. Today Hip Hop is changing. These mumble rappers are popping mollys, perks and Xanz. They’re drinking lean and partying like rock stars. Everybody is wearing designer clothes, chasing bags, hustling and bagging hotties and thotties. It’s sad because I think about how young and impressionable I was at six years old and fell in love with Hip Hop. I pray for Hip Hop every single day. I ask God to send some really dope artist that will bring substance back to Hip Hop. Bring back artist that are active in the communities. Give us artist that will give back by helping others. Let there be more teachers, leaders, advocates, and activist in Hip Hop.  Let all of Hip Hop unite and become a mighty driving force in the world. People tend to forget that Hip Hop is the biggest and strongest culture in the world. It us the only culture the units every race, color and religion. I thank my mom for introducing me to hip hop. I love hip hop and I always will.

The BXtraordinary One: The Introduction of Alex Villafaña

Refreshing, ambitious, someone with actual talent, not the usual thing that you hear everywhere else and definitely an extraordinary one with a voice that represents hunger, wanting to succeed, but also being thankful and showing love to those he appreciates. Not forgetting where he comes from and where he is going. Alex Villafaña is a dope upcoming artist from the Highbridge section of The Bronx whose also a current Hostos Community College graduate. I personally had the honor of meeting this dude over a year ago when we were in the same Linguistics class. Of course, his image makes him noticeable and hard to ignore but with a voice over a fresh and polished hip hop/trap beat, Villafaña keeps your attention. The homie who you can definitely sit down and actually have a discussion with about hip hop, a Jay-Z or a Nas album two, he’s definitely what I would call, according to one of his songs, the “BXtraordinary” one. His mixtape “Looking For The Title” explains it all. It’s a body of work that’s about a young man whose trying to find his way and who is on his way to the top at the same time. Taking and learning from what life is giving to him, not forgetting where he comes from, using that to make him both a better person and artist. His latest single, which is a freestyle joint called “Nas Album Done”, is something just a little more dope though. So short, so simple but straight to the point. Love to witness dope talent from my hometown. More reminders that not all rap is wack, especially ones who can actually rap. To check out his music, his SoundCloud is Alex Villafana, add him on Facebook at Alex Villafaña and follow him on Instagram @villianhustle.

MALE ROMPERS?

This entire week men rompers have been the hot topic. There has been talk on the news, memes on Facebook and conversations between total strangers.

Some people are not in favor of men wearing rompers. Their reason is because rompers are worn by women. It is even associated with homosexuality.

Rompers were originally donned by infants and small children but have been recently trending in the fashion world.

People please get a grip. Everyone possesses the freedom of choice. If a man decides to wear a romper please respect his decision. That does not make him gay or any less of a man. Judge not as you will be judged first.

This is the world according to Regina.

Being A Mom To A Child With Autism

Being a mom is a very challenging job. As a mom your days really never end. A mom is on call from the time she opens her eyes until they close at whatever ungodly time that life situations allows her to go to bed. All mothers have demands on their life, however the life of a mother to a child on the autism spectrum can be a gift and a curse at the same time.

Children with autism are very different from other children because they learn differently. A mom with a child on the autism spectrum have to find new ways to teach this child that has a developmental delay that hinders the learning process. The education process is different. If the child is diagnosed through early intervention there is a wealth of services available for them including speech therapy, occupational therapy and ABA skills. These are in home services until the child is school age after the third birthday. Although mothers of children on the spectrum are pleased with the fact that the child is learning it can also be overwhelming to have service providers in the home on a daily basis. It sometime can feel like an intrusion on life.

At three years old a child with autism begins attending school after getting an individualized educational plan also known as an IEP. The mother than has the pleasure of calling schools to check for class availability and then begin to book tours and interviews for schools. This is a lengthy process. At times it requires taking days off from work. Once the child is in school the mother now has to be an advocate to ensure that the child is getting serviced properly.

Children on the autism spectrum are more prone to getting sick. The immune system of a child with a developmental delay is often times not as strong as other children. This can cause a mother with a child on the spectrum to take more trips to the emergency room resulting in May sleepless nights.

Some children with autism have sensory issues. The sensory issues allow them to be very energetic. The children tend to run instead of walking. Children on the spectrum have a tendency to sleep less due to these sensory issues. Their little bodies do not embrace sleep. So now mom has a messy home to clean.

These are all things that I have experienced on my journey being a mother of a child on the autism spectrum. My son who is now three years old was diagnosed with high functioning autism a little after his second birthday. I contacted early intervention because I noticed a speech delay. He is two years old and had a vocabulary of less than ten words.

When the service providers began showing up in the home it felt like my life was under a microscope. I had strangers coming into my home telling me to do things differently. The change was uncomfortable. They wanted me to stop babying my baby and let him learn to be independent. I didn’t realize the severity of his speech delay because he never needed to talk. I was always at his neck and call. I was making it worst because he never had to ask for anything. I always took care of his needs. Now it was time for me to let him learn to do things like a big boy.

When it was time for my baby to go to school I was overwhelmed. My baby was getting on a bus with strangers and would be with strangers for eight hours of the day. I was in fear. My son is nonverbal. My head raced with thoughts. What if someone hits him or mistreats him? How will I ever know? The transition to school was a really big deal for me. I am happy to report that school is great and my baby is learning so much. I see the progress. He is growing up very beautifully and doing such amazing things.

Although my baby is sick from time to time with colds and stomach viruses he is doing well. I am grateful he doe go to the emergency room it is never an over night stay. At this point he doesn’t like taking any kind of medicine. I give him a diet high in iron. He eats lots of fruits and vegetables. This prevents trips to the doctor because he is getting the nutrients that he needs.

My baby is a big ball of energy. He usually wakes up at six o’clock in the morning and is able to stay awake without a nap until at least 10 o’clock at night. He gets into everything and anything. His favorite pastimes are playing in water, going into the refrigerator, and bothering his older sister. My days are busy and my nights long. I am on a journey through life with a tour guide that has autism. I love my tour guide with all of my heart. I wouldn’t trade my life as an autism life for anything in the world.
