He began rapping in the early 1990s, and released his debut album, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot in 1998 to both critical acclaim and commercial success, selling 251,000 copies within its first week of release. He released his best-selling album, … And Then There Was X, in 1999, which included the hit single “Party Up (Up in Here)”. Since his debut, DMX has released seven studio albums.

He has been featured in films such as Belly, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave and Last Hour. In 2006, he starred in the reality television series DMX: Soul of a Man, which was primarily aired on the BET cable television network. On April 2, 2021, at approximately 11:00 pm, Simmons was rushed to White Plains Hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition following a heart attack at his home possibly resulting from a drug overdose. The next day, his attorney Murray Richman confirmed Simmons was on life support. That same night, Simmons suffered cerebral hypoxia (oxygen deprivation to his brain) as paramedics attempted to resuscitate him for 30 minutes. Simmons’ former manager, Nakia Walker, said he was in a “vegetative state” with “lung and brain failure and no current brain activity”. His manager, Steve Rifkind, stated Simmons was comatose and that he was set to undergo tests to determine his brain’s functionality and his family will “determine what’s best from there”.

On the morning of April 9, 2021, Simmons lost functionality in multiple essential organs, reportedly his liver, kidneys and lungs, and was pronounced dead shortly after at age 50. It was revealed on July 8 by the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office that Simmons’ official cause of death was a cocaine-induced heart attack.

It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot: The 20th Anniversary

As the 90’s were slowly coming to an end, hip hop was in a place where it was shiny, glittery, and downright Hollywood. With it’s shiny suits and dresses, fancy cars and jewelry, big smiles and alcohol, all it took was for one guy from Yonkers to come along and redirect hip hop back to it’s roots in the streets. With his rough exterior and vulnerable lyrics and big attitude, Earl Simmons aka DMX not only brought hip hop back to the streets but he was the first artist in hip hop to release two number 1 albums in the same year. On May 12th, 1998, DMX released his debut album “It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot.” With four singles out, DMX was the new face and voice for the streets, the ghetto, the first to be the voice for vulnerable black men in hip hop since Treach from Naughty By Nature. Giving us stories of pain, abuse, struggle, drugs, violence, and sex, while staying true to his higher faith. Just like his hometown natives, Mary J. Blige and The LOX, he also gives that same gritty, street, raw emotion, pain and truth in his music. “Get At Me Dog”, “Stop Being Greedy”, “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem”, and “How’s It Goin’ Down” featuring Faith Evans were all big hits for Simmons. 20 years later, Simmons is known as one of hip hop’s most treasurable artists. One of those artists that stayed true to hisself an where he comes from, despite the troubles with the law, drugs, and alcohol. With an acting career and also party hits underneath his belt, DMX is a certified legend in this hip hop biz.

The Definition of X: The Legacy of DMX

The year was 1998 when this Yonkers native exploded on the scene with one catchy but an inviting, in-your-face phrase, “Get At Me Dog.” His raps are the stories about the hard times in life, including drugs and abandonment. He raps with a sorta bark/growl in his voice that makes you think of the biggest, most meanest pit bull with the biggest bark you’ve ever heard. This man goes by Earl Simmons aka Dark Man X or DMX for short. He was a part of the Ruff Ryders clique, a hip hop clique that includes members of a family who came from the Bronx. Ironically, they come from 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the same place where hip hop all started with the father himself, otherwise known as the infamous DJ Kool
Herc. In Ruff Ryders, there’s a young, dope and fresh producer who goes by the name is Swizz Beatz. Swizz is the guy who provides all of the sound for the Ruff Ryders artists including Eve, The LOX, and Drag-On. DMX is the stand out guy who catches your attention with his raw, rough and rugged voice with a pain that tells a story of a guy who comes from struggle and pain. His pain isn’t the pain you get over overnight, it’s the kind of pain that takes a lot of healing. You gotta go to a place where you’re willing to change and get better. DMX is trying to get from one place to another. There’s no denying the kind of talent that DMX is and the list of hits he put out for almost the past 20 years. “What These Bitches Want”, “What’s My Name?”, “Come Back In One Piece” with the late great Aaliyah, “Where Tha Hood At” and more. X’s legacy continues and he is well loved and respected, despite his troubles and what he’s been through. The man is a hip hop legend. A legend who represented for the streets.
